On September 21, World Alzheimer’s Day is commemorated, in the context of World Alzheimer’s Month.\u00a0<\/span><\/b><\/p>

Amarin joins this international campaign coordinated by the World Health Organization in 1994, to raise awareness and publicize the problems faced by people affected by dementia, helping them, their families and caregivers to go through this silent disease.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

Alzheimer’s disease is the most common cause of dementia, accounting for 60-70% of cases worldwide, although not the only one. In Argentina, it is estimated that 1 in 8 adults over 65 years old suffer from it 1<\/sup><\/span>. It affects more than 50 million people in the world, and this number is expected to double every 20 years. This is why today Alzheimer is considered one of the most significant health issues of the 21st century.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

What is Alzheimer's?<\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

Alzheimer’s is a neurological disease in the group of neurodegenerative ones.<\/p>

Although the causes of Alzheimer’s are not yet fully understood, in the brains of people affected by the disease, abnormal deposits of two proteins forming aggregates and inclusions have been identified (senile or amyloid plaques) in and between cells, preventing communication between neurons 2 3<\/sup><\/span>. These proteins are called beta-amyloid and tau protein. It is a slow process, in which these denatured proteins begin to accumulate in the hippocampus, triggering neuronal death and the reduction of neurotransmitters such as acetylcholine, that are the key to the proper functioning of the synapse. This process can begin 10-20 years before diagnosis. Over time, the size of the brain is significantly reduced, affecting almost all of its functions<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

The first symptoms of Alzheimer’s disease are generally mild, but as neuronal damage progresses, they get worse and begin to interfere with daily life. The disease can manifest itself differently in each person, but the most frequent indicators are 4<\/sup><\/span>:<\/p>
